After selection DeShorn Brown with the sixth overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, the Rapids went for Dillon Powers with the No. 11 selection five picks later.

There was still plenty of talent on the board as predicted at No. 11, though Eriq Zavaleta and Walker Zimmerman had both been selected by FC Dallas and the Seattle Sounders, respectively. The Rapids opted to avoid the second Generation Adidas player and another international player in Jason Johnson and instead went for a replacement for Eric Avila, who was recently traded to Chivas USA.

Powers was a solid attacking presence in the midfield for Notre Dame during his four years there — his final season, he put up five goals and nine assists in 22 appearances for the Fighting Irish. Also, unlike some Notre Dame footballers, his girlfriend probably exists.

The Rapids will not have another pick until the 25th overall selection, in the second round.
