Wells Thompson was on the outside looking in the second that the team selected Oscar Pareja as their new manager last January. I think we all knew that Wellsy was unlikely to see a career in burgundy after 2012, and a lot of people predicted he wouldn't even make it to the end of the season.
Those people, of course, turned out to be completely correct. Wells never really found a niche to fill in Oscar Pareja's 4-3-3. They tried to use him as a wide striker, but his deficiencies in the attack were undeniable. They slotted him in as a defensive midfielder, a position that I always thought he worked well in under Gary Smith, but he couldn't cut it when he was given the responsibility of distribution from the back. There was no wing spot to give him that he could sit back and hack people down, a position that he perfected with Smith but couldn't with Pareja.
Really, it's almost a surprise that he even got the 600 minutes that he was given. Good luck to him in his future endeavors — he's not bad at what he does, but couldn't do much of anything in a system of passing, possession and attack.
