COMMERCE CITY – The 2023 Colorado Rapids cannot catch a break. Not at home. Not from the officiating. Not from Mother Nature. On Tuesday night, the Rapids were scheduled to play Portland Timbers for 4th of July. They played half a game. There were no fireworks on the pitch nor after play was suspended.

The game was delayed. Then they played the first half. Then it got delayed at halftime. Now for the second time this year, the Colorado Rapids have a home game rescheduled due to severe weather. This was the second Rapids delayed match in two weeks.

Head Coach Robin Fraser shook up the lineup from Saturday. Diego Rubio and Jonathan Lewis again did not make the team. Darren Yapi bumped Kévin Cabral to the bench, playing up top with Michael Barrios. Bryan Acosta started on short rest off Gold Cup duty. Lalas Abubakar was in as Fraser returned to a back five.

Just like the Vancouver game back on June 21, this match had a weather delay. At 7:33 PM MT, the match was announced as delayed due to weather. Rain and lighting followed for over an hour. Prior reports of potentially tennis ball sized hail were exaggerated. The teams did a second warm up at 9 PM and the match kicked off not quite two hours late at 9:25 PM.

Colorado were the better side in the first half, though no goals were scored. Abubakar had the best chances for either side, on back-to-back corners. David Bingham made a fantastic save on the first. Abubakar put the ball into the back of the net on the second.

Marvin Loría had the one great chance for Portland in transition. He shot the ball over the bar. Darren Yapi was pulled back by Dario Zuparic just outside the box just before half with no foul called. His eventual shot was well wide.

Minutes into halftime, the match was again delayed for severe weather. The postgame fireworks were canceled as a result due to local ordinance. Lightning delays continued until 11:42 PM when the game was officially abandoned.

Just like the Whitecaps match, the second half will be rescheduled for another date. Not this week. TBD.
