On Sunday afternoon, Colorado Rapids confirmed Djordje Mihailović has made the USMNT Olympic Team. This article has been updated to reflect that.

COMMERCE CITY – Esteemed soccer journalist Steven Goff reported that Colorado Rapids attacking midfielder, Djordje Mihailović, has been selected by Marko Mitrović, head coach of the 2024 U.S. Men’s Olympic soccer team to join the roster. Club sources confirmed this over the weekend. On Sunday afternoon, the club announced it.

Mihailović would be one of three, over 23-year-old players to play in the forthcoming Summer Games in greater France. This comes after his U-23 side failed to quality for the 2020 Tokyo games. The Serbian American has recorded 10 goals and 9 assists in 21 games for the Burgundy Boys.

The Men’s Olympic Soccer Tournament 18-player roster is restricted to players under the age of 23, with a special allowance for three overage players.

The writer also stated that center backs, Walker Zimmerman and Miles Robinson will join Mihailović as the other two overage players.

His father, Aleks, was asked by the Burgundy Wave after the July 4th match with Sporting Kansas City if his son was selected. His generous response consisted of a beaming smile, a wink, and the posture of a very proud father. He also did not say, “no.”

The senior Mihailović played in the now-defunct NASL for the Washington Diplomats and Jacksonville Tea Men. He is currently an accomplished licensed soccer coach and consultant. He was born in Serbia and introduced the sport of soccer to both his daughter Aleksandra, and son, Djordje.

U.S. Soccer has called a press conference for Monday, July 18 at noon ET in Manhattan, New York. It is during this media event that Mitrović, also a Serbian, will formally announce and discuss his team then.

Rapids’ midfielder Cole Bassett is also a roster candidate. With Diego Luna reportedly not making the squad out of Real Salt Lake, it seems unlikely that Bassett has made the team. Especially when the club announced just Mihailović.

Luna and Bassett are both age appropriate players. While Mihailović was competing for an overage spot, all three would have similar roles with this national team. A central midfielder focused on attack creation and possession. It could be that Mihailović took a spot for either of them. The Federation could have selected the three overage players because of their potential relevance to the first team for 2026. Something Bassett and Lune are very much on the outside looking in on.

With Mihailović suspended for the July 7 match against St. Louis CITY, the No. 10 has likely played his last game for Colorado until at least the start of Leagues Cup. Expect him to miss the games against LA Galaxy, New York Red Bulls, as well as the third leg of the Rocky Mountain Cup.

U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team head coach, Emma Hayes, will confirm her selections. She selected Coloradan’s Lindsey Horan, Mallory Swanson, and Sophia Smith.

The Men’s side will participate for the first time since the Olympic Games in 2008.

The USA will kick off its Olympic return on Wednesday, July 24, two days before the Opening Ceremony, against host France at Stade de Marseille. The U.S. will then take on New Zealand on Saturday, July 27 also in Marseille.
