SANTIAGO DE QUERÉTARO – It took one game for Sam Bassett and Cole Bassett to combine to score for the Colorado Rapids. Well, one preseason game. Sunday morning in Querétaro, the Pids had their first preseason game, against Celaya F.C. of the Mexican second division.

I should say we don’t get much information about preseason games. There was no stream. Any video will be released by the club and edited. Historically, the Mexican teams don’t put much info out if any. We do not publicly know their lineup. So what we do know we get directly from the Rapids. In the past, we’ve gone a whole preseason with highlights just of the goals scored. So all we really have to go off of is who played and who scored. Here’s the club’s recap.

Here’s how the Burgundy Boys lined up over the 90 minutes:

First Half: Reggie Cannon, Wayne Frederick, Nico Hansen, Alex Harris, Calvin Harris, Andreas Maxsø, Ian Murphy, Connor Ronan, Kimani Stewart-Baynes, Noah Strellnauer, Jackson Travis

Second Half: Chidozie Awaziem, Cole Bassett (Daouda Amadou, 73’), Sam Bassett, Zackory Campagnolo, Joshua Copeland, Michael Edwards, Omir Fernandez, Oliver Larraz, Rafael Navarro, Keegan Rosenberry, Sam Vines

Two hybrid lineups. A mix of veterans and kids. Some R2 guys on both teams. No Djordje Mihailović, who’s close to full training. For the first preseason game, this is fine. Based on the defenders on the field, it looked like a back for both halves. The two center back pairs were one veteran and one younger guy who hadn’t played together previously.

As for the goals, Celaya opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Second round SuperDraft pick Josh Copeland made it 1-1 in the 64th minute, set up by Rafael Navarro. Then the Bassett Hounds took the lead in the 69th. Nice. Cole found Sam at the top of the box to score. Celaya tied it up in the 87th. The match ended 2-2.

It’s great to see the Bassett Brothers create offense together. Great for Copeland to score as well. He was a dark horse pick by the Rapids FO. Might be a bit of a project for Erik Bushey on R2, but scoring in the first preseason game is a good first step.

Colorado plays Querétaro FC of Liga MX at 10:30 a.m. MT next Sunday, January 26.
