Commerce City, CO – Burgundy Wave can confirm Colorado Rapids have signed USMNT attacking midfielder from Paxten Aaronson from Eintracht Frankfurt for a club record fee. Aaronson has signed a five-and-a-half year Designated Player contract through 2030. Assuming he passes his medicals today, he is eligible and available for selection Saturday at LA Galaxy.

Burgundy Wave and other outlets have reported the transfer fee as $7 million plus $1.5 million in performance incentives. Sources have since told BW that the transfer fee was negotiated in Euros and is €6 million plus €1.5 million in incentives. The price in dollars then fluctuates with currency exchange. At the time of publishing that’s equivalent to $7.03 million plus $1.76 million in incentives. That’s complicated and a mouthful. BW will be quoting the price as “$7 million plus 1.75 million in incentives” going forward for simplicity. Sue us.

Burgundy Wave expects Aaronson to be the highest paid player at the club going forward.

This move comes on the back of start attacker Djordje Mihailović forcing his way to Toronto FC for a club record $8 million. With player and agent cuts, Colorado are functionally spending all the Mihailović money on his replacement. This is a big swing and a big risk. It is a bit out of character for Pádraig Smith and the Rapids Math ethos.

“Sometimes market opportunities present themselves that are too good not to go after. Paxten was actually really interested in coming, this was something that we know we had to go all in on. We had to push the boat out on,” said President Pádraig Smith, during the introductory press conference.

“When you go into a transfer window, you want to get better. We knew about Chido (Awaziem) quite early. When what happened with Djordje happened, we had to take a deep look at that. What do we want to do here? I’m thrilled that we found a way to get better.”

So much for “replacing Mihailović in the aggregate,” to steal the Moneyball line. Granted, this was an unprecedented moment for the club given Djordje’s departure and the financial strength that came from it.

Both players came to the Rapids from Dutch clubs. Mihailović played 36 games, just over 1,000 minutes, 2 goals, 2 assists for an AZ Alkmaar team that finished fourth. Aaronson played 33 games last year, 2,692 minutes, 8 goals, 4 assists. FC Utrecht finished third. The 21-year-old won Young Player of the Year. By these numbers, Aaronson is a better player today than Mihailović was the day he signed for Colorado.

The club is offering a jersey exchange. Fans can exchange their Headwaters and Original Greek Mihailović #10 kits for equivalent shirts with Aaronson on the back. Paxten will assume the #10.

On the field, expect Aaronson to play as a pressing 10. He might not score on set pieces like Mihailović but his defensive work rate is better. Aaronson could go out left in the recently played 3-4-3. There’s room to rotate, play free style jazz with Darren Yapi up top. What they do will not change. The shape and who’s doing tertiary roles will vary.

“I think my best position is #8, #10, pressing the ball, winning the ball and being able to advance it to create chances and goals.”

I would expect to see Chris Armas deploy the 4-2-3-1, get Cole Bassett in the double pivot and Aaronson central. Have Darren Yapi cheat inside from one of the winger positions. That would put Colorado’s three most important players in their best positions with support. Aaronson isn’t one for the spotlight, but knows it will find him here. That does leave the Rapids still a bit lacking in veteran vocal leadership, but that was true before Mihailović left.

“We’re going to empty our tank to help (Aaronson) in every way,” Armas said.

Aaronson is coming into a team of familiar faces. He was in two U-20 camps with Yapi. He was at the Olympics with Josh Atencio and Olympics camps with Cole Bassett before that. He saw Zack Steffen at the Gold Cup camp. He never played with Keegan Rosenberry at Philadelphia but knows and looks up to him.

“Coming into a locker room like this intrigued me as well. Build a U.S. Men’s National Team exciting group. Not a lot of MLS teams have done that. Going into a locker room with a bunch of American guys. I enjoyed every moment in the Netherlands. I hadn’t been able to settle, being able to call something home,” Aaronson added.

It’s encouraging for Rapids fans to see the club clearly and immediately re-invest all the money within the same window. Assuming Aaronson can get up to speed and fit coming from Frankfurt’s preseason, Colorado shouldn’t miss many beats. They’ve got an easier schedule in their final seven games. They should make the playoffs and be a tough out.

Aaronson has four caps for the senior USMNT. He played in every game at the Olympics last year (alongside Mihailović). He made substitute appearances at the 2025 Gold Cup against Haiti and Trinidad & Tobago. USMNT Bro Twitter lost its mind earlier this week. Some claimed the U.S. Soccer Federation should retaliate against the Rapids for ending Aaronson’s national team career by bribing him with a DP contract specifically to spite the USMNT as unworthy MLS team. “Moral blackmail.” These comments overlooked Mihailović and Zack Steffen getting called up retreating to the backwaters of Commerce City with their tails between their legs having not established themselves in Europe.

Aaronson was anyways going to have an uphill battle to make the World Cup roster. Sources tell Burgundy Wave RB Salzburg and Southampton were both interested. Transfer bids could have been about the same, maybe slightly higher. The Rapids convinced Aaronson they were a better fit for him right now. How dare they.

“I’m not on social media a whole lot. To come into a team, to fight for trophies, to get better in roles and aspects that maybe Europe can’t give me. I spoke to them on the phone. I felt an instant connection. I started thinking about my future. It led me here,” Aaronson responded.

He is not on Twitter. He’s aware that there are Euro Snobs who disagree with this decision. He doesn’t let it get to him.

Armas came to the defense of his player: “What’s unfair is to make judgements and have outlandish opinions on what’s best for a young man. MLS should celebrate moments like this where our best young players want to come play in our league. For me it’s not baffling or confusing at all. It’s sad that we have this type of talk out there.”

This is a bit of a risk, spending all their money in one place. I would love this move if it was $5-6 million instead of $7 million. He came up through the Philadelphia Union academy. They know what he’s like in MLS. This is a soft landing spot compared to trying to break into the Frankfurt squad. The floor is high certainly. Can Aaronson be a star difference maker in big games when Colorado’s at a talent deficit? That will determine Colorado’s potential.

  1. Here’s the thing about this kid. He’s a great player, but a better human. He’s someone that the Rapids will build upon. I’ve followed him his whole career and have had the privilege of seeing him play in 5 other countries. I’m a big fan because he works his ass off and makes everyone around him better. Yes, some hate this move. Frankfurt is a very sterile city? Denver? Ask John Denver. It’s paradise. This kid will build a life here with his family. Yes, Europe his great but the MLS made a big statement here. #BackPax
