Colorado Rapids confirmed the signing of Dante Sealy on December 23 for $1.9 million in GAM ($1.15 million in 2026 and $750K in 2027). There are incentives up to $600K. CF Montréal retains a sell on clause. This article has been updated to reflect this.

Commerce City, CO – Sources tell Burgundy Wave that Colorado Rapids have traded approximately $2 million in General Allocation Money (GAM) to CF Montréal for winger Dante Sealy. This was first reported by Tom Bogert of The Athletic.

Sealy, age 22, recorded 9 goals and 2 assists in 30 MLS appearances for a Montréal team that finished just 2 points off the Wooden Spoon. The left-footer plays on both wings, but was primarily a right winger this past season. Like potential new teammate Wayne Frederick II, he has been capped multiple times this year with Trinidad and Tobago.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, his father played for FC Dallas. Sealy was in the academy setup there, signing a first team contract with Dallas in 2019. He spent most of that year with North Texas SC, then a USL League One side, pre MLS NEXT Pro. He also had a two year loan stint with Jong PSV during 2021-2023.

Having been released from Dallas, he signed a two year deal with Montréal for 2025-26, with a team option for 2027. Should this transfer be completed, the Rapids will inherit that contract. The 2025 season was his first year as a full time starter in MLS in which he was a bright spot on a bad team. He was a wingback with Dallas and was moved further up field at Montreal.

This is a very Rapids pick up. Trade for a young player who’s somewhat proven in MLS. Improve their club situation and have it benefit both parties. On principle, good move for Distressed Assets FC. I’m sure Matt Pfeffer and the analytics team have some metrics that aren’t obvious looking at the surface level stats. Montreal fans seemed to think he was inconsistent and the 11 goal contributions was a bit of an over performance on the season. The omens are mixed.

That said, ~$2 million in GAM is a lot of money for a 22-year-old with two full seasons starting (2025 with Montréal, then his second loan year at PSV). Transfermarkt for what it’s worth has his value at about half that. $2 million, GAM or cash transfer, is more than the Rapids paid for Ted Ku-DiPietro or Josh Atencio last year. This is such a big price tag, some fans will expect him to be a stater and an impact starter, unlike those two were last year.

Only Jesús Ferreira (FC Dallas to Seattle Sounders, $2.3 mill) and Leonardo Campana (Inter Miami to Philadelphia Union, $2.5 million) have cost more. The Rapids FO must really like the player. So too must presumed head coach Matt Wells. His 2025 guaranteed compensation was just $122,022. So maybe he’s a project for Wells in 2026 and breaks out in 2027. For the Rapids to build on the last two years, he cannot be a bust like Kévin Cabral was.

Still, Colorado’s signing a player at a position they made two big moves (Alexis Manyoma and KDP) last year and previously paid big money for Cabral at that position. What’s it say about KDP if you’re spending $2 mill to sign another player after one year? And if he’s moving back to wingback, $2 million to keep Reggie Cannon and Keegan Rosenberry on the bench?

As an attacking player on his off wing, this likely signals that Calvin Harris will not be re-signing. On paper, it could be Alexis Manyoma on the left, KDP and Sealy competing for the starting right winger role, and Kimani Stewart-Baynes on the bench. We will see. This is just another piece of the offseason build.
