Commerce City — The Colorado Rapids look to bounce back after a brutal defeat at home to Portland last time out. They face their first Eastern Conference opponent in Charlotte FC in an early kickoff at DICK’s Sporting Goods Park. It’s Bark at the Park, will the pups bring the good luck for the ‘Pids? Let’s look at this matchup.

Humbled by Portland Timbers:
The Rapids suffered defeat for the first time in the 2025 MLS season at the hands of Portland at home, and they truly did suffer in this loss. Adam Beaudry made his home MLS debut and was left to dry multiple times by the ten in front of him. The Rapids were bossed on xG, 0.55 to 1.96, and it showed in the scoreline. The Rapids attack failed to produce much throughout the game and struggled in the second half.
It was looking to be the start of a good outing for the Rapids, who were the better team for the first 35-40 minutes. Then, in second-half stoppage time, Atencio found the back of his own net with a striker’s finish that just felt unlucky. It was the second time in two home games for the Rapids where they conceded moments before half-time. It so happens that in both of those games, the Rapids also started the second half poorly, with Antony doubling the lead in a hard-to-watch moment for Andreas Maxsø and Adam Beaudry. Kevin Kelsy gave Portland the dagger, scoring seconds after coming on in the second half, and that was enough for Armas to throw in the towel.
The Rapids have given up three goals in back-to-back home games, but unlike against Dallas, the attack stalled and proved to be frustrating to watch at times. It felt like a game that was decided the moment the ball bounced off of Atencio and found the corner of the net, a game where if the Rapids score first, the rest of the game falls more into their hands. They wouldn’t have had to press the action and force more men forward, leaving themselves vulnerable to what Portland wanted to exploit, the counter. What-ifs aside, the Rapids did not have a fun night and will look to do right against Charlotte.
The only shock from the injury report is Reggie Cannon being out with a groin injury. Vines could return from his hamstring injury, as he is listed as questionable for this week’s matchup. I don’t see Armas rushing Vinesy back this soon, though, and I expect to see Ian Murphy stand in for Cannon. This would be the second time Reggie Cannon has missed a game due to a groin injury. Whether it is a new case or the same groin that he is trying to play through, getting him healthy is a big priority for the Rapids.
Reggie Cannon out against Charlotte. Could we see the return of Vines? No other surprises from the Rapids, Tim Ream questionable with an illness for Charlotte. Could be a lot of turnover for the Charlotte back line.
The biggest change from last week’s team would be getting Zack Steffen back in net. The 29-year-old has returned to Colorado after his stint with the USMNT for the CONCACAF Nations League. Steffen did not see the field but was more bad luck than anything, as illness ruled him out of a start against Canada. Getting him back in goal would be a huge boost for this Rapids team.

A player we won’t see back is Connor Ronan, as the midfielder had an appendectomy days after the Portland loss. He is expected to be sidelined for two to three weeks which will leave Armas with a midfield depth problem in the meantime. Wayne Frederick should be back from his own international call-up with Trinidad and Tobago and would be the first man up in the midfield, but the second man up would be Ali Fadal. The 21-year-old Ghanian has yet to make a debut with the Rapids since arriving in Colorado, but he may be forced to make an appearance in the midfield with Ronan unavailable.
What is Going on with the Defense?
The defense is starting to become a not so under the radar worry for this Rapids squad. At home is where this team has been punished the most, conceding six goals in two games, but it hasn’t looked so pretty away from home either. The Rapids had started the year with a clean sheet at St. Louis but gave up 17 shots and 2.01 expected goals (xG), not the numbers you could bank on getting a clean sheet with. Then they gave up three goals and 1.99 xG against Dallas, 1.36 xG against Austin, and 2.51 xG against San Jose.
Giving away almost ten expected goals in five games is not a winning formula. They got away with it against St. Louis, Austin, and San Jose behind great Zack Steffen performances, but he won’t always be there to save the team. This was shown against Portland, as the team gave up more goals than expected, only the second time they have done that this year. So, what is going on with the backline for the Rapids? You look across the line, and there doesn’t seem to be a weakness, a weak link. But the answer may not be with the personnel, but how they have been instructed to play this year.
The Rapids have looked more and more like the high press, Red Bull style of play that we were used to seeing with Chris Armas’s former teams. With the high press comes the high line, and the press itself leaves the high line in some difficult situations throughout games. This was evident for the last two goals from Portland in that game, with a direct and quick counterattack leaving the Rapids defenders scrambling in both instances. The high press that Armas has wanted to use in some games this year is high risk, high reward, and we have seen said reward in the two away wins before this game, but if a team can exploit this press like Portland did, it spells trouble for this defense.
Charlotte’s Quick Start:
Charlotte made one of, if not the most newsworthy signings in the winter transfer window, bringing in Wilfred Zaha on loan from Galatasaray. However, Charlotte has been one of the best defensive teams in the MLS so far this season. In five matches, they had conceded only four times, and against some pretty tough opponents. Kristijan Kahlina has carried his form from 2024 into 2025 and has excelled in net for Charlotte. In the attack, second-year man Pep Biel has been that guy for Charlotte, already bettering his goal contribution tally from last year, with six of the ten Charlotte goals coming from a Pep Biel contribution.
Charlotte has started the year with ten points out of the possible 15. After salvaging a point from a Seattle own goal in stoppage time, Charlotte has beaten Atlanta United, FC Cincinnati, and San Jose, while losing to ten-man Inter Miami without Messi. They took apart the teams that they beat and only conceded once in those games, against names like Evander, Miguel Almiron, and Chicho Arango. It has been an impressive start of the year for The Crown, and they still haven’t gotten the most out of their superstar Zaha yet.
The Rapids will have to break down a very good Charlotte defense, something that they have struggled to do this year. Charlotte will be without their starting center-back, Andrew Privett, who was sent off in their last match against San Jose. It will be interesting to see how Charlotte will adapt to Privett’s absence, and if the Rapids can exploit a potential Charlotte backline who will have to gel together quickly.
Prediction: Steffen’s return helps shore up the Rapids backline but isn’t enough to stop red-hot Charlotte. Charlotte FC wins 2-1.

CENTENNIAL — Over the years in American soccer, when clubs have moved its headquarters to the suburbs, it can often be the start of a slow spiral toward irrelevancy. That is the exact opposite approach Denver NWSL announced on Thursday with a new training center in the works.
The newest National Women’s Soccer League club announced a groundbreaking partnership with Cherry Creek School District to build a 12,000-seat temporary stadium with 4,000 permanent seats. It also includes the club headquarters and a training facility on a 43-acre plot of land directly across the street from where the Denver Broncos practice in Dove Valley.
The plot of land, which has been undeveloped since the city bought the land located at South Potomac Street and East Fremont Avenue in 2011, will become the club’s first home stadium and permanent training ground starting next year.
Why the South Suburbs makes sense
For what its worth, sources within the organization had told Burgundy Wave that the initial group at “For Denver FC” had been eyeing this plot of land since 2023, when the grassroots effort launched. One source described the City of Centennial as “very keen” on that plot of land. So much so, that it was the City of Centennial who reached out to the group first for them to consider the south suburbs.
The south suburbs makes sense for its club headquarters. If you know much about soccer in Colorado at all, you know the south suburbs are where the youth scene is aliveand thrives. Out of the 15 active Coloradans in the NWSL, 10 are from this area, including USWNT’ers Mallory Swanson and Jaelin Howell. Colorado Rush, Real Colorado and other prominent youth clubs are all based here. It is a no-brainer location and is what comes to mind when you think ‘where does Colorado Soccer live’? It’s the south suburbs.
If you’re out of the loop, last week, Denver NWSL announced plans to build a permanent, stunning 14,000-plus stadium at Santa Fe Yards in Baker, which could be finished by 2028. In the meantime, the club will start building a temporary stadium and training facility.
Features of the site, per the club, include the following:
The Denver NWSL performance center and temporary stadium will sit on 43 acres in Centennial
Approximately 20,000 square foot training facility purpose-built for professional women’s sports
8 soccer fields including the 12,000-seat temporary stadium field
A dedicated team room for Denver NWSL featuring player lounges and private changing rooms for all of the athletes
State-of-the-art recovery facilities including hot and cold plunge, float pod, red-light therapy, and recovery lounge
A dining area and lounge for the players and family
A dedicated, quiet family room
A video analysis theater
An elite training core for integrated strength and conditioning, sports science, and sports medic
“Denver NWSL is setting a new benchmark for what it means to support professional athletes with the infrastructure they deserve,” said NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman in a statement. “From a world-class training environment to a thoughtfully designed temporary stadium, this initiative is an example of how our clubs are leading the way in reimagining what’s possible in women’s sports. We’re especially proud of the collaboration with the City of Centennial and the Cherry Creek School District, which ensures this investment will benefit generations of athletes and students for decades to come.”
The Details of the Training center
According to a Memorandum of Understanding from earlier this month, Denver NWSL and CCSD will split the cost of the design, construction and building of the temporary stadium, which Colorado Public Radio’s Denverite and The Denver Post reported would cost in the range of $20-25 million. The deal was approved at Wednesday night’s school board meeting.
“Our partnership with the City of Centennial and the Cherry Creek School District represents the power of sports to unite communities and create opportunity,” said Denver NWSL controlling owner Rob Cohen in a club statement. “We’re proud to invest in world-class facilities that will support our athletes, engage students, enhance education, and leave a lasting impact on our community and the region. Centennial is the perfect home to begin this exciting chapter for Denver NWSL.”
For those unaware, Cherry Creek School District is one of the state’s largest school districts. It serves roughly 300,000 residents across eight different towns and has 53,000 students, including eight high schools, all of which compete in the largest CHSAA classification system for athletics. The school district is a total powerhouse. This deal is a golazo considering CCSD’s reputation alone within athletic and academic circles.
How much is behind this effort?
Per CCSD publicly available documents, Cherry Creek School District will escrow, or contribute, $15 million from its 2024 voter-approved $950-million bond to build the training fields and share-use fields, which, per the agreement, will last for an initial term of 20 years. Students from the district will be able to use the fields. Once the team moves into Santa Fe Yards, the stadium size will be reduced to a permanent 4,000 seater.
While CCSD will partner with the team for the temporary stadium and fields, Denver NWSL will be responsible for building out the 20,000-foot training facility and club headquarters.
“Today marks an exciting new chapter for Cherry Creek Schools and the start of a long-term partnership that offers another Pathway of Purpose and life-changing opportunities for students,” said Cherry Creek Superintendent Christopher Smith in a statement. “This project provides substantial short- and long-term benefits for students, families, and the community while maximizing taxpayer investment in the district. With this innovative partnership, Cherry Creek Schools continues to grow our excellence and lead in providing world-class programs and experiences for students.”
Other benefits for the school district will include, per the Memorandum of Understanding:
Internship opportunities for CCSD students in sports management, health and wellness, facilities and equipment management, and other related roles
Presentations or instruction from Denver NWSL support staff for CCSD athletes and students, including Cherry Creek Innovation Campus business students
500 tickets per season for regular-season games (not to exceed 50 tickets per game). The District will also have an opportunity to purchase 50 tickets per game at a discounted rate, to be agreed upon by all parties.
Support for CCSD’s Teacher Apprenticeship Program for athletes interested in pursuing a future teaching career
The partnership includes an upfront donation of $100,000 to the Cherry Creek Schools Foundation and access to Denver NWSL tickets
CAA ICON will support the development, design, and construction of the stadium working with Populous. Populous, which is also behind Santa Fe Yards, will design the performance center and temporary stadium.
Is it time to build a team yet?
The biggest pieces of the puzzle are now checked off the box. A stunning training facility, a game-changing stadium in Baker. Given this organization’s strong start, it’s expected that the next logical steps will be to fill out the strong bones of the club, ranging from a president, GM, sporting director and manager (or however they decide to go about it), to the smaller, crucial roles like finding a communications director or a nutritionist. That will likely go hand-in-hand with building out the first-team roster itself.
2026 is coming up quick. The NWSL is already a few weeks into its season. But there’s still a ton more to go until a ball will be kicked in the Centennial State. Still, this is one heckuva start.

COMMERCE CITY – All things, good and bad, come to an end. Streaks of a backup goalkeeper not starting a home game. And unbeaten streaks. On Saturday night, Colorado Rapids hosted Rapids killer Antony and boggy team Portland Timbers. It was going ok, until it wasn’t.
There were two changes from the win at San Jose for Chris Armas’ side. Zack Steffen was on national team duty so Adam Beaudry made his first ever home start and second ever MLS appearance. Josh Atencio was back from his groin injury and started in the midfield triple pivot.
For Portland, big money striker Kevin Kelsy was on the bench. Evander replacement David Da Costa started. So did legendary defensive midfielder Diego Chara.
Colorado were the more energetic side to start the game. Fives minutes in, they had their best chance of the first half. Kévin Cabral got into space and crossed the ball into the box. Rafael Navarro hustled and slid to try and get a touch but it was just out of reach. Oli Larraz played well in the midfield on both sides of the ball. They got into good areas, they just didn’t convert that to chances. The final pass was off.
Portland had their moments on the counter. Sani Moreno nearly had a breakaway in the 42nd. Captain Keegan Rosenberry made a recovery run and blocked the shot.
Typical of Timbers-Rapids, Portland bided their time and opened the scoring. In first half stoppage time, David Da Costa danced inside the edge of the box. He delivered a cross in that went off Josh Atencio, like a back heel, and in the far corner of the net. The own goal came with Cabral off the field due to an injury. Adam Beaudry’s clean sheet was muddied, with the score 0-1 at half.
Colorado had a shot on goal moments into the second half but that excitement was quickly squashed. On 48 minutes, Moreno found Brazilian Antony for a run up the middle. There was space as Andreas Maxsø was out of position. He beat Beaudry on a one-touch finish to the bottom corner.
Substitute Kelsy put the match away in the 75th. Jimer Fory delivered a great cross as the striker lost both the center backs on a run. He volleyed it past Beaudry, smashing it into the back of the net. The match ended 0-3.
Unbeaten Streak Ends on Poor Offensive Outing:
Colorado had never started an MLS season unbeaten through four games. The streak didn’t make it to five. This had probably been coming. Colorado won two close games on the road in which they absorbed pressure and lost the xG battle. The team started well, they just couldn’t break down a low block once Portland scored their first goal and got comfortable.
“Myself especially, I haven’t taken control of games this year, set the tone like I did last year. That needs to be a point of emphasis going forward. I go make the team click, making sure we have the right tempo. Right now, it’s all over the place. We’re not in control,” Bassett told Burgundy Wave.
Eight shot attempts, one on goal, 0.54 xG per FotMob. That’s not good enough at home. Cole Bassett still isn’t clicking in possession. They can be Mihailović dependent at times. Larraz didn’t hit some of his passes. Cabral has been wasteful all season. Omir Fernandez or Calvin Harris have to start next week in the afternoon game vs Charotte FC.
“Play fast without rushing. Staying on the ball a little longer. Calming down a little bit. We were antsy,” Armas said postgame.
Sad Cascadia for Atencio. Antony, Rapids Killer:
The three goals were bad but fixable mistakes. The own goal was unlucky. For Atencio to give that up as a former Seattle Sounder has to hurt. And that’s four goals given up in the final five minutes of the first half in five league games.
On the other two goals, Maxsø does a poor job in gap control. Not sure if they didn’t anticipate the play or there was a miscommunication. But that’s two plays where the goal scorer runs between the center backs and has an open look at goal.
“That’s a pissed off locker room. It comes down to decisive moments. They did better than us. We had so many little moments that could turn into chances. We just weren’t sharp enough. The first half in so many ways was good,” Armas told Burgundy Wave.
The second goal was a bad reminder for Rapids fans. Antony scored twice in the season opener last year. In 2024 and 2025, he has 8 goals in 38 appearances for Portland. Four of those have been against the Rapids, across four games. What’s it say about your defense when a winger scores against you every time and rarely against everybody else?
“It sucks. We could have defended that a bit better being down to 10 men at that point, see out the half. It’s unlucky,” said Bassett. “Maybe it’s a few of us leadership wise who could step in and see out halves. Right now it’s back and forth. It’s a learning moment and a wake up call for some of the leaders in the group to step up.”
Adam Beaudry Home Debut: Not his Fault
Losing 0-3 in your home debut as a Colorado native and homegrown goalkeeper isn’t fun. But none of the goals were Beaudry’s fault if you ask me. He maybe could have organized the back line better on the first goal so that situation doesn’t happen. But that’s an unlucky bounce for Atencio.
On the next two, his defense hung him out to dry. Zack Steffen saves the second goal probably but there’s no stopping the third.
He was decent in possession. He cleaned things up when there was a loose ball. He looked far more comfortable than on Decision Day last year, even with the scoreline.
“To be able to play in front of them for the first time was definitely something I’ll be grateful for. Always sucks to lose like that, especially in front of your home crowd,” Beaudry said.
“They’re all supportive. Happy for me. I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else. The message was how we respond to this to get three points next weekend,” the stoic homegrown said of his teammates.
“For us it’s about second balls. In the first half, the reason he got most of those chances was winning second balls. In the second half, they were getting those first. It’s about finding the right mentality and the right headspace, managing that better. I have the utmost praise for Adam,” Reggie Cannon told Burgundy Wave.
Also Darren Yapi made his season debut off the bench coming back from a shoulder injury that limited him in preseason.

Commerce City — The Rapids return home to face the Portland Timbers this Saturday at DICK’s Sporting Goods Park. It is fittingly Women’s Empowerment Night with several activations connected to NWSL Denver. The Rapids look to make more club history with a fifth straight game unbeaten to start an MLS season. The last time Portland came to Colorado in March, a snow clasico was born in a crazy 3-3 draw. This time, no snow is forecasted, so let’s take a look at this matchup.

Perfect in two-game away stretch:
The Rapids went to Austin and then San Jose and took all six available points from those two games. They now have two wins in three away matches in 2025, whereas they had five wins in 17 away matches in 2024. These two wins also helped the Rapids start the 2025 MLS season unbeaten through four games, the first time they have done that in club history.

So, how did the Rapids make it happen in San Jose? Zack Steffen. A career-best 12 saves from Steffen guided the Rapids to a 2-1 win. He faced 2.37 xGOT (Expected Goals on Target) and prevented 1.37 goals. Statistically, the Rapids were second-best on the night, with San Jose having more possession, more shots, more shots on target, and better xG.
From last night: In the club’s 2-1 victory on Saturday night, Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Zack Steffen recorded a career-best 12 saves, the second-most in a single game in club annals, while helping the Rapids to an unbeaten four-game start to the season for the first time in team history.
But the only stat that Chris Armas will care about is the 2-1 scoreline that saw the Rapids left victorious from the Bay Area. The Rapids had a similar plan against San Jose as they did against Austin. They wanted to push the envelope, press the opponent, and not sit back and soak up the pressure. It was not Chris Armas’s patented Red Bull high press that we have seen from Armas in the past, but it is not the 4-4-2 low block that we have seen from this team when away from home.
Though, for the first 35 minutes of the game, the Rapids were stuck in their own half, just trying to keep their head above water against a rampant Earthquake attack. The Rapids survived and turned defense into attack for the first goal of the game, and Cole Bassett’s first of the year. The game became more of an even affair after the opener, with Chicho Arango scoring off of a corner right before half-time. Super subs Omir Fernandez and Calvin Harris combined for the winner, and Steffen continued his great game with key saves down the stretch.
The Rapids didn’t dominate either game against Austin or San Jose, but they did what they needed to do to get a result on the road in MLS. They limited the big chances that San Jose had and were clinical in the chances that they had. The Rapids did better against Austin, as they didn’t need a 12 save game from Steffen in Texas, but they are winning games away from home, and winning away will provide great success in MLS.
The injury report is looking a little better for the Rapids this week. Atencio and Ronan should help with Midfield depth. Portland won’t have multiple players due to international duty, neither team will have their starting keeper.
The Rapids got healthier over this week, with Mihailović, Atencio, and Ronan not being a part of the report. This will give Armas more choice in the midfield, and I think he will go back to Atencio, giving Larraz and Bassett more freedom to attack and push the game. Elsewhere, the Rapids continue to not have much depth on the backline and will continue with this setup. The 4-3-3 looks to be the preferred formation for Armas, and this will continue against Portland.
The biggest miss for the Rapids on Saturday will come in goal, as Zack Steffen will be on international duty with the USMNT. This leaves a Steffen-sized hole in the Rapids net, one that youngster Adam Beaudry will have to try to fill. The homegrown will have to make his first start and appearance of 2025 and first since his MLS debut during the 2024 Decision Day loss to Austin.
Beaudry seems to be the future number one in the net for the Rapids and has already become a standout youth national team goalkeeper, with numerous call-ups to the youth level of the US, including leading the U-20 USMNT to the CONCACAF Championship final in 2024. The 18-year-old will look to make better of his MLS debut against Portland.
What to Make of the Wide Players:
Some interesting storylines from the start of the season have been the personnel along the width, the wingers, and the full-backs. Injuries have played their part along the width for the Rapids, but there are some healthy names that are getting left on the bench that had significant minutes in 2024.
Both position groups have one locked-in starter, Kévin Cabral, and Keegan Rosenberry has started every game in 2025 for Chris Armas. The opposite flanks have been hard to lock down to start the year. The full-back spot normally falls to Reggie Cannon, but injury has made Armas look to Ian Murphy, Jackson Travis, and Anderson Rosa.
While Cannon is healthy now, where does Vines fall into all this? He has been out since preseason with a muscle injury that we were told had a similar timetable as Bassett’s last year. His exclusion in Mexico was precautionary, but he has been out for a month and change for the Burgundy Boys. It will be interesting to see what Armas does with Vines once he is back.
On the wingers’ front, all but KDP have been healthy all year, and yet Armas has looked towards winger replacements in all but one game. Since LAFC at home in the CCC, Bassett and then Mihailović have occupied the winger slot opposite of Cabral. In MLS play, Omir has a total of 73 minutes in four substitute appearances, and Calvin Harris has 43 minutes in two sub appearances. Both Omir and Harris were key contributors for the Rapids in 2024 but seem to have a reserved role in 2025.
The most worrying sign for the pair was Chris Armas opting to start youngster Wayne Frederick II at San Jose, keeping the Rapids in a 4-3-3, with Mihailović starting wide. With Josh Atencio and Connor Ronan out in that game, it seemed likely that Armas would go back to a 4-2-3-1 and put one of Omir or Harris in, but whether Armas wanted to keep the 4-3-3 or didn’t want to look the winger’s way, they did not start. But it is not all bad for the duo, as they came on in the 65th minute and combined for the winner, so maybe this is a sign of more to come from them. For now, it is hard to see them made the starting eleven.
A Frustrated Portland Team:
Portland may feel hard done by after their 1-1 draw at home against LA Galaxy. There was a controversial no-call on a potential penalty in second-half stoppage time that would have given Portland a chance to win the game late. I’ve yet to see someone comment on the call who hasn’t said that they believed it was a penalty. It seems pretty egregious when MLS’s in house show Instant Replay was baffled by the call.
The no-call only made a frustrating game more frustrating for Phil Neville, as Portland continued to create little in front of goal, and gave away an unnecessary goal to Cristian Ramirez off of a long ball hat caught the Portland backline sleeping. In a game with a combined 1.5 xG from both teams, it was a bad goal to give up. And xG, and goals for that matter, are stats not too kind to the Timbers this season.
Portland has yet to have a game where they get over the 1.0 xG mark and have only scored three times this year, with two of those coming from set pieces. They have four points from four matches, and three of those four games have been at home. In open play, Portland has struggled to create chances to start the year. It is still early days for Neville & Co, who might need to adjust to life without Evander after they swapped him out in a deal with Cincy for David Da Costa.
The Rapids will have a chance to build on their defensive performances from the away trips against a team that has struggled to find anything offensively. But a desperate team is a dangerous team, and after the start of the season, Portland is coming to Colorado desperate to make things right.
Prediction: The Rapids continue to roll and take advantage of a deflated Portland side. Rapids win 2-0.

DENVER — Since the announcement that Denver was getting a NWSL team became official in January, the first question people had was ‘Where will they play?’
On Tuesday, the organization announced the answer to a boisterous, gleeful and packed gymnasium of students at the Girls Athletic Leadership School in Baker. Denver NWSL will build a 14,500-seat purpose-built stadium and entertainment district at Santa Fe Yards, adjacent to the Broadway Station light rail stop at Santa Fe Drive and I-25. If all goes to plan, the stadium could open in spring of 2028. It will be the first purpose-built stadium for women’s sports in the state. The stadium will be designed by Populous.
City of Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, an avid soccer fan and key supporter throughout the bid process, said that it was a day area residents would not forget.
“This truly is a day for Denver history,” the mayor said.

When Johnston unveiled the renderings, students screamed in excitement. Looking at the plans, it’s hard not to get excited.
NWSL Chief Operating Officer Sarah Jones Simmer called it “the largest private investment in the history of women’s professional sports.” Cohen confirmed the stadium will be privately funded by the ownership group, but Johnston used “public-private partnership” as the land beneath the stadium will be city-owned.
The stadium will sit at the northwest corner of a larger 43-acre plot of land at Santa Fe Yards, which was once the former site of a rubber factory. The City of Denver will acquire the 14.3-parcel with the ownership group, as well as build out an entertainment district in the Baker neighborhood, similar to how LoDo was built surrounding Coors Field, the blocks surrounding Empower Field at Mile High and the eventual plans for Ball Arena. The Denver Post and Denverite reported property records for the parcels of land are worth close to $24 million. Other pieces of the stadium puzzle is incorporating public transportation with RTD light rail stop, the South Platte River Trail as well as develop Vanderbilt Park East into the site plans, which currently is a dirt lot. On top of the infrastructure, the parcels of land are already in a TIF district — Tax Increment Financing — which are meant to promote improvements in certain neighborhoods of the city.
“It really will be placemaking and community building spot that we want to do,” Cohen said.”
‘A stadium in a park’
For controlling owner and governor Rob Cohen, finding the right piece of land — in Denver proper, the urban core — was the focus, but the other amenities, such as access to public transportation, walkability and easy access to the suburb soccer clubs — was also key.
“We scoured the city searching for a potential site that would make sense to have this team” Cohen told the audience. “It didn’t take us long until we started to hone in on Santa Fe Yards, and the reason for that was, it checked all the boxes for us. … The neighborhood, we felt would create a great vibe on gameday, but would also be something we could activate 365 days a year.
“We wanted something that could be about community building and placemaking, we really felt that this concept of a stadium in a park is something very different than what you usually see, which is a stadium surrounded by concrete and asphalt.”

It is evidently clear what this new era of stadium building is about, and what it is not, as Cohen seemed to allude to in Commerce City with what the Rapids have failed to do with Victory Crossing.

Jones Simmer called the stadium transformative for the league. She knows that the NWSL is in the midst of a brand-new era, spurred on by what the Kansas City Current ownership did last year by launching CPKC Stadium in downtown Kansas City. Now, it’s Denver’s turn.
“Our players deserve nothing less,” she said. “Because of partnerships and investments like these, we’re building the future where women’s sports are not just included, but they’re celebrated and prioritized.”
Elsewhere around the league, Chicago is looking for its future stadium after it has been playing at an MLS-1.5-era suburban stadium, which is inconvenient to the vast majority of its fanbase. Boston, the other expansion team set to kick off in 2026, is going through its own struggles with renovating White Stadium in the city proper, as the group is in the midst of a lawsuit about renovating that.
While there is still a long way to go between formal land sales, re-zoning from City Council to build the stadium and entertainment district, construction and eventually kickoff. This deal appears on the outset fairly straightforward and, frankly, a minor miracle in city planning and bureaucracy.
“This is a place where you see all people of all backgrounds together in one united cause, that rarely happens in our society, and, at a time where I’d argue we need it more than ever,” said Minority Owner Jason Wright.

Cohen said the group is finalizing the deals for the interim stadium while the permanent ground is being built, and added that a training facility location will be announced “in the next two weeks”. He added that building out front office and staff is also a priority.
The club is set to choose from six names in the coming weeks, and given that season ticket deposits have already passed 5,280 (The Post added it’s closer to 10,000), the stadium announcement was the icing on the cake for what looks to be the NWSL’s strongest expansion team and brand launch in years.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Beware the Ides of MLS in March. On Saturday night at PayPal Park, they had come but they’d not yet gone. The Colorado Rapids played on the road to San Jose Earthquakes. Zack Steffen and company found another way to win a road game.
Rapids manager Chris Armas shuffled things up amid some injuries. Reggie Cannon was able to start at right back after missing last week with captain Keegan Rosenberry at left back. Ian Murphy went to the bench with Andreas Maxsø starting again at center back. Josh Atencio had a groin injury, so second year midfielder Wayne Frederick II made his first ever MLS start. Djordje Mihailović and Rafael Navarro started in the attack.
Hernán López sustained an injury and required surgery this week. Beau Leroux replaced him in midfield. The lineup was otherwise as expected. Chicho Arango and Josef Martinez were in attack.
The first 38 minutes of the game was one way traffic. The Quakes had 12 shots, 8 of them on goal. Zack Steffen stood on his head to keep the match scoreless. Steffen made two saves on Martinez in the opening seconds. The best save came in the 29th, when he palmed a shot off the goal line on a corner from Martinez.
Colorado somehow took the lead in the 38th. Mihailović ran down a long ball and crossed it into the box. Goalkeeper Daniel got to the cross first. Cole Bassett was there to tap in the rebound. It was his first goal contribution of the season and much needed given how he’d started the game. There was controversy as Bassett was well offside on the initial pass from Navarro. Bassett did reset himself and every Quakes player tracked back except Bassett’s initial marker Jamar Ricketts.
San Jose deservedly tied the game in first half stoppage time. On their sixth corner, Arango found space and volleyed it out of the air and into the back of the net. The half ended 1-1.
The second half was more balances. Minutes in, a confident Bassett found Oli Larraz. His shot was blocked. Mihailović made a solo run in the 59th minute but Daniel made a great save. Quakes striker Ousseni Bouda could have had a brace in the two minutes after that. First he forced a great save from Steffen, shooting from the top of the box. A minute later, he hit the crossbar.
The match turned on its head in the 71st minute. Again, against the run of play, Colorado took the lead. Rosenberry sent a through ball to Omir Fernandez who stayed on side. Somehow, the substitutes Fernandez and Calvin Harris found them 2-on-0 against the keeper. Fernandez passed it to Harris for a tap in. It was their first goal contributions of the year.
Colorado saw out the final 19 minutes plus stoppage time to win the game 1-2. San Jose had a few looks to tie it up. The most dangerous was Martinez with a hard shot in the 85th that Steffen saved with more acrobatics.
The Rapids now have two wins and two assists four games into the MLS regular season.
FULLTIME! RAPIDS WIN 1-2! Outplayed in the first half. They find a way to make it 1-1. Opportunistic from Fernandez and Harris on the winner. Steffen with 12 saves. Not pretty at times. Made their own luck. Worked the ref a bit. Mature game management. UTFP #Rapids96
The Rapids goalkeeper is on a heater going into USMNT camp. He saved 12 of 13 shots on goal. It could have been 3-0 at halftime. This after a great performance and a clean sheet at Austin. Take away a bad two minutes against Dallas (not his fault), he’s given up 4 goals in 6 games all comps. All of them good.
“Zack Steffen showed his quality. Last year, people externally had a fun time poking at him anytime he made a mistake. I think they’ll be really quiet tonight,” Armas told Burgundy Wave.
“I felt when I was watching him, I didn’t think they were going to score on him. He looked like a big guy in a small goal. I’m not surprised. Stood tall. Looked sharp and comfortable.”
He looks composed. He’s giving the defenders in front of him confidence. He’s kept it clean in possession. Steffen should go into camp competing to start the first game of Nations League. Oh, and he plays well in that all purple kit.
Several firsts for Rapids players:
Cole Bassett turned back into Goal Bassett tonight and boy did he need that. It was a tough start for the midfielder. Lots of running, poor execution in possession. That goal reinvigorated him. He was confident and committed in the second half. Hopefully this is the start of a purple patch for the Rapids midfield chef.
“”Really happy for him. He puts in so much work. He’s passionate, diligent and dedicated. We need goal contributions from him. He’ll keep working hard,” Steffen told Burgundy Wave.
It was great to see Fernandez and Harris combine on the winner. Though Calvin’s touch on the goal could have been cleaner. Those were the first goal contributions of the season by Rapids wingers.
Kévin Cabral hasn’t had a good start to the season offensively. He’s been fine defensively and in the press. Harris and Fernandez brought energy and quality to the final third. It might be time for one of them to start over Cabral. There’s competition at winger with them and a recovering Ted Ku-DiPietro.
Lastly, big props to Frederick on his first MLS start. He filled in for Atencio and did not look like a deer in headlights. Kept it simple and safe at times. But he was not a weak link in that midfield defensively. His MLS debut was at San Jose last year for 1 minute. He’s played 84 minutes after tonight.
“We were getting pulled apart a little bit. It put a lot of stress on Wayne. He showed up on the night. He was fearless. Won balls. Interceptions. Tackles. He looked comfortable out there,” Armas said.
Rapids survive and win on the road, again:
Some might say this win was undeserved. San Jose bossed the first half. FotMob had the xG as 2.41 to 1.82 in favor of the home side. And the Harris goal was 0.90 xG, almost half the Rapids output. Colorado was clinical when they needed to be. They played into San Jose’s weaknesses and frustrations.
Almost two and half expected goals but the Quakes had 28 shots, averaging 0.09 xG. The Quakes had possession without a purpose and a bunch of low quality chances. With some antics after the whistle from Josef and Chicho. Colorado created two great chances and buried them.
“It’s a big win for us. The best part is your team take all the experiences from last year, suffer through tough moments, make some plays, and to not shrink in the tough moments. This is what we want, to become THAT team. In the toughest moments, be at their best,” Armas said in his opening statement.
PRO Referee communication:
On a funnier note, the second Rapids goal saw the head referee Alexis Da Silva lose communication with the VAR. The broadcast said they were checking for a handball in the buildup. The goal was given. Someone had to a call a phone on the sideline to communicate that. MLS After Dark. Love it.

Sarachan Derby:
On a sentimental note, this game was the Sarachan Derby. Colorado Rapids assistant Ian Sarachan is the son of longtime Bruce Arena assistant Dave Sarachan. Ian coaches college soccer prior to joining the Rapids in 2024. This the first time they ever met as opposing coaches. Well done Ian on the win.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Rapids finish their away stint at San Jose, a team very changed from the rock-bottom western squad of last year. A new head coach and new stars like Chicho Arang and Josef Martinez will prove a new and interesting challenge for Chris Armas and the Burgundy Boys. Let’s take a look at the matchup.

First Win at Austin:
The Rapids are coming off of their first win of the season, a 1-0 victory at Q2 Stadium. They remain undefeated in 2025 and get a much-needed clean sheet on the day. A clean sheet that referee Marcos DeOliveira II threatened with two points to the spot that were both overruled by VAR. Both were the correct decision, but some luck had to be involved for the Rapids to walk away with a win. The Pids were not the better team on the night statistically, but on the road, they did what they needed to get a result.
Gritty performance from Colorado Rapids tonight. Managed the game well once they took the lead. Frustrated Austin. Defense rode its luck a bit. But this make the start of the season feel much better. 5 points from 3 games. Didn't get wrecked by Rubio. Good night!
The Rapids scored early, with a beautifully direct passage of play that went from Bassett to Larraz, to Mihailovic, who sprayed a perfect through ball to Navarro, who finished with a chip. Each pass went forward more than the other; it was the directness that caught the Austin backline sleeping. Fast-paced play was the name of the game for Chris Armas, as we saw 90 plus minutes of high intensity play from the Rapids.
It was interesting to see that the Rapids had continued a press, even up 1-0 late in the game, where we had seen them fall back into a low block 4-4-2 in games past. Chris Armas had said leading up to this match that they wanted to continue to play on the front foot and press the opposition. That is what we saw from the Rapids, and it would not surprise me if this is the way forward from Armas.
The Rapids got the clean sheet with a makeshift backline, which saw Ian Murphy at left-back instead of his usual position at center-back. That position was filled with the return of Andreas Maxsø, his first appearance this season. It will be interesting to see the depth on that backline against San Jose, as Ian Murphy came off with cramping, and Anderson Rosa has already had all of his allotted call up windows from Rapids 2.
The injury report has thrown a wrench into the perceived lineup going into this game. If Mihailović can go, I see Armas going back to a 4-2-3-1, similar to last year. With Atencio and Ronan out, there isn’t much to go off of in the midfield for Armas. The Rapids will have to make things work with what they have available on Saturday. We could see a very different lineup on Saturday if Djordje doesn’t play.
Colorado Rapids at San Jose Earthquakes Availability Report:Welp, at least Cannon's healthy. Josh Atencio is out with a groin injury. Djordje Mihailović has a questionable hamstring. Ronan and Vines still out. 4-2-3-1 tomorrow?Hernán López out for the Quakes.
Reggie Cannon was practicing with the team as normal and is off the injury report. No word about Ian Murphy on the injury report, so he should be good to go as well. This finally leaves Armas with some options along that backline. But for Cannon and Murphy, if one can’t go, I expect the other to step in. Maxsø seemed to win back his starting spot as soon as he was healthy, but it isn’t clear who will start at center-back if the Rapids have at least two healthy outside-backs.
I think Armas will go to what seemed like the starting center-back pairing going into the season, with Maxsø alongside Awaziem. Andreas excelled alongside Bombito when they paired up last season, and Awaziem, to me, is a similar build at center-back as Bombito. Awaziem is strong and fast and provides the cover that Maxsø needs alongside him. The duo has the potential to replicate what Maxsø and Bombi did last season, which will allow the team to be able to attack with freedom, knowing the quality of what’s behind them.
The New 4-3-3 Look (and What it Means for Mihailović):
Throughout most of 2024, Armas went with a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Mihailović at the center of the midfield. This is what he started with against LAFC in the first leg of the CCC. Since then, he has experimented with a 4-3-3, starting with Bassett as the odd man out in the midfield, pushing him out wide. This felt like a defensive look from the Rapids, and it produced, with the Rapids only conceding once in two games, both away against St. Louis and LAFC.
But it had its downsides, as in those two games, the Burgundy Boys did not register a shot on target. The attack was not there, and Bassett’s absence in the midfield was apparent. A change was needed, and a change was made. Bassett swapped spots with Mihailović for the game against Dallas, and it opened up the attack. The Rapids scored three times, with Mihailović playing a crucial part in two of the goals. In that game, we saw a little bit of a free-roam Mihailovic, but he mostly played as a makeshift winger against Dallas. The game against Austin was a different story.
Free roam Mihailović was in full swing and was a key part in the winning goal. Throughout the match, Mihailovic tucked in and filled the center attacking midfield role he normally would occupy, creating a diamond in midfield and a whole lotta space on the left wing. It was interesting to see Austin not follow Mihailović on the goal, with Austin right-back Mikkel Desler opting to stay out wide and mark the space Mihailović left. I think this was a mistake from Austin, but it shows what teams might have to do when a more attacking fullback than Ian Murphy is lined up on Mihailović’s side. Mihailović leaving the space out wide for Vines or Rosenberry to exploit seems like a winning formula for the Rapids and creates a whole host of problems for opposition teams.
San Jose’s Rebuild:
San Jose was firmly the worst team in the league last year and was in need of change for 2025. And rebuild they did. They started by bringing in head coach Bruce Arena, an MLS veteran coach who most recently brought New England Revolution from a league afterthought to the promised land of a supporters shield win. They loaded up on MLS veterans, signing former MLS MVP Josef Martinez and star Chicho Arango to bolster an attack already featuring Cristian Espinoza, Hernan Lopez, and Amahl Pellegrino. They should help what was the second worst attack in the Western Conference last year.
This was evident in their first game of the season, beating RSL 4-0 in their home opener. The new guys didn’t make their mark on the score sheet, but the team made their mark on RSL and put the rest of the league on notice. They followed this up with a win at Sporting KC, despite a red card for Hernan Lopez early in the second half. They hit their first roadblock at home against Minnesota, but six points out of nine possible to start 2025 is very good for the team that finished with only 21 points in 2024.
San Jose plays with a formation not used as much anymore with a 3-5-2, but they have flexibility within this formation to become more attacking or more defensive. The two wingers from San Jose could not be more different. On one side, you have left-back Jamar Ricketts, who provides defense on the left side, and on the other side, you have winger Cristian Espinoza, who is more of an attacking threat on the right side. San Jose seems to have too many weapons in the attack and not enough space, with Espinoza having to fall back more and Pellegrino not even making the starting eleven in most games.
No matter the personnel the Rapids will face, Minnesota laid out the blueprint to beat this San Jose team. Minnesota was strong defensively, giving up 17 shots but only one on target throughout the game, and they took their chance when it came. A familiar formula that the Rapids showed they are capable of with the 1-0 win away to Austin. If the Rapids can have a similar performance against San Jose, they’ll put themselves in a good spot to snatch a result away from home.
Prediction: The Rapids recreate the performance against Austin and remain strong defensively. But they can’t hold forever, leading to a 1-1 tie and a point to bring back to Colorado.

PREVIEW – Tomorrow Colorado Rapids head to San Jose Earthquakes for MLS Matchday 4. The Quakes might have had the biggest glow up in MLS over the winter. Kasey Kazliner from Quakes Epicenter answered some questions about the new look MLS After Dark Goonies.
This looks like the biggest offseason overhaul in San Jose Earthquakes history. They hired Bruce Arena. He’s brought half of New England with him. Chicho Arango and Josef Martinez have come as well, with their MLS bonafides (and baggage). What are expectations for this year? Are you all still in shock at how different the team is?
I certainly am shocked by the 2-1-0 start, given how bad the Quakes were in 2024. But we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves — San Jose hasn’t had a winning season in over a decade, so it would be rational to remain having limited expectations. But the Quakes have shown flashes so far: the four-goal routing of Real Salt Lake, shutting down Sporting KC and showing solid offensive promise in the loss last week to Minnesota United.
Bruce Arena’s mind seems to be in the right place. He’s definitely keeping the team grounded and embracing the depth that’s been unlocked, given the big Chicho Arango and Josef Martinez signings. I think they can make the playoffs, but I wouldn’t necessarily bet on anything.
The team feels different. Last year’s Quakes would seemingly give up in late moments and drop points, allowing 78 goals, the most in a season ever. They haven’t shown that complacency yet through three games. Hernan Lopez’s three-to-four-month injury definitely will hurt, though. San Jose appeared a bit disconnected in the midfield last week while missing Hernan, who was sidelined with a red card. His future in San Jose feels murky, even though it’s just begun, and he didn’t look like himself during the first two games.
Last game was the club’s first loss of the season. 0-1 at home to a decent Minnesota United team. What went wrong in that game? What needs to be better this weekend?
The Quakes didn’t play badly, but Minnesota played better. The Quakes had some good offensive looks as the game wound down while down a goal but seemed to be overly ambitious and forcing things. They need to be more patient.
The conceded goal was off a bad clearance. Daniel was phenomenal in net and he’ll need to keep up this production to keep SJ in games. The absence of Hernan caused there to be fewer high-quality touches in the midfield, forcing Espinoza to do SO MUCH more work himself.
Amahl Pellegrino slotted in for Hernan and simply wasn’t good. Poor touches, unproductive passing, and couldn’t break through Minnesota’s defense, which looked very physical and strong. As for Arango and Martinez, they felt way less involved without Hernan — but they need to step up themselves. It’s not a bad loss; it’s something San Jose can learn from, but they had a lot of trouble probing Minnesota’s stout back line.
Chicho and Josef have a history of cooking against the Rapids. Correct me if I’m wrong, Arena’s mostly played them up top together in a 3-5-2. What can Chris Armas expect from them?
Rapids fans should expect versatility from Arango. He’s not your typical striker; he can create plays and pretty much accomplish what the Quakes were missing last year (involvement from the strikers). He played the target 10 while transitioning back into the 9 when needed against Minnesota. It wasn’t his best game by any means, but it’s something to be aware of.
As for Martinez, he looked really slow for SJ against the Loons. He’s inevitably dangerous up top, and unlike Arango, he pretty much stayed in his own spot.
Having those two allows Arena to possess sustained attacking pressure. Last year, with solely Hernan and Cristian Espinoza truly facilitating, it was hard for the team to materialize a consistent offense, causing it to rely on its subpar defense. But now, even without a top defensive unit, the star duo of Arango and Martinez forces teams to stay level-headed when facing San Jose, even if the Quakes are trailing.
I’m an MLS Fantasy sicko. Jamar Ricketts is one of the cheaper starters in the league so far this year. How’s he been for you?
Jamar Ricketts has shown some really solid promise this year. He missed most of last season with an injury and was an MLS NEXT Pro player anyway, so expectations were unknown for him entering 2025.
Ricketts is a vertical player with tons of lateral speed and has spent time at wingback to show off his mobility. He needs to improve his finishing, but he has the tools to be successful in MLS. He scored on opening night versus RSL and looked very due for a goal even before he found the back of the net during the waning moments of the first half.
He’s a good supporting player for Espinoza at wingback since requiring Espinoza to play laterally for most of the game might not be sustainable for an entire season, especially since Ricketts is only 23, six years younger than Espinoza.
Expect Ricketts to create looks out of the defending third and use his quickness up the sideline to progress into the attacking end.
Lastly, the Quakes are historic chaos merchants in MLS. The last game between these teams was that wild 3-2 comeback for San Jose with the Rapids having multiple goals called back. Got a prediction for us?
Colorado has a respectable roster and will be another test for San Jose. I love the chaos, but I don’t know if I’ll see much of it transpiring on Saturday. The Rapids’ offense has been dim this season (24th-ranked xG according to FootyStats), while the Quakes will continue to have to navigate the absence of Hernan. I hate being boring, but I see a 1-1 draw with one team scoring in the first half and the other scoring in the second.
The Quakes have given up two goals this year, both on self-inflicted wounds (a handball in the box leading to a penalty kick and a failed clearance). Putting the ball past Daniel isn’t easy, but bank on a San Jose error to score on him. I expect some resurgence from the Quakes’ forwards and see them scoring one goal; I’ll go with Arango as my pick.
