LOS ANGELES – Following their embarrassing loss to a herculean Mexico team, the United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) team came out huffing and puffing, and channeled all of their negative energy at an unsuspecting Columbia side.

The result was a scrappy 3-0 win the W Gold Cup Concacaf quarterfinals.

In the 11th minute, Alex Morgan was taken down in the box on an early U.S. attacking run. The referee pointed to the spot and captain Lindsey Horan stepped up to take the shot.

Horan set the game’s tone early. Her torpedo-of-a-penalty-kick in the 13th minute found the back of the net, and Team USA was off to the races, and never looked back.

Nine minutes later, a galloping Jenna Nighswonger, kicked in a goal from her left side. The swift defender came all the way up the sideline to take and make her shot from well within the 18 yard box.

Finally, in the 46th minute of the lopsided match, Jaedyn Shaw toe-poked in a beautiful cross in front of the mouth of the goal that arrived on target from Trinity Rodman.

With the decisive victory, the Lady Yanks move to the tournament’s semifinals in balmy San Diego this Wednesday against a red hot Canada. The Canadians secured its place in the semifinal round after they edged Costa Rica, 1-0, in overtime. It was their fourth consecutive shutout victory during the lively football event.

The other semifinal showdown will see Mexico play against Brazil.

Post match, USWNT interim head coach,  Twila Kilgore, described how the team was able to recover from their unexpected loss to Mexico.

“We genuinely didn’t do anything different in our preparation. That’s the key to being able to be part of this program, is to be able to show up when it’s going well, show up when it’s not going so well and be the same player and execute in the same ways.”

She continued, “It’s really just about regrouping from obviously a tough moment and identifying not just how we want to grow and some of the things that we need to fix, but also directly related to our next opponent.”
