Commerce City, Colo.- Colorado Rapids have acquired center back Loïc Williams the club announced Wednesday morning. The 24-year-old has been with Granada CF in the Spanish second division for two seasons. He will join the team in the summer, having signed a four-and-a-half season contract through 2029-30 with an option for 2030-31.

Loïc is composed on the ball, competitive, fast, and of course left footed. These are qualities that are rare in the soccer landscape, and we are pleased to secure his signature,” said Sporting Director Fran Taylor.

“Loïc brings athleticism, presence and an elite defensive mentality,” added Head coach Matt Wells.

Williams is of Congolese dissent but was born and raised in Spain. He’s played his entire professional career there, in the lower divisions. He’s played regularly. He’s listed as 6’2″ and left footed. He’s played right back as well. We do not know the transfer fee situation, but Transfermarkt has his value around $1 million.

He fits the mold for what the club and the new manager are looking for in a center back. It will be interesting to see what role he plays with the team given he’ll be joining in the summer. Sources have told Burgundy Wave this might be a TAM deal. If so, he’s expected to start. Does he pair with the veteran Rob Holding or challenge him? Does he take minutes away from the Aussie Wonderkid Lucas Herrington? We’ll see. For now, we’ll check out his highlights with Granada as they finish their season. They’re currently midtable, 10 points out of both relegation and promotion.

Williams will occupy an International Roster slot. With that and Billo Diop signing, expect Donavan Phillip and Ali Fadal to all but officially be Rapids 2 players for the year, unless someone goes on loan to the USL.

The MLS primary transfer window closes tomorrow. Colorado currently have two open U22 spots and last we heard had the second most GAM of any MLS team. BW is not expecting the club to fill both of those spots this window, which is disappointing after the Cole Bassett transfer.

It is the international break this weekend. Colorado play at Toronto FC at 11 a.m. MT the day before Easter.
