On March 27, Colorado Rapids confirmed the singing of George Minoungou. The trade with Seattle Sounders is for $2 million in GAM, half in 2026 and half in 2027. There are no incentives. Seattle retains a sell on clause.
Commerce City, CO – Burgundy Wave can confirm multiple reports that the Colorado Rapids have signed Georgi Minoungou. The Burkina Faso winger joins the Rapids on the back of being with the Seattle Sounders and Tacoma Defiance since 2022. The fee is reported to be around $2 million GAM. Minoungou is under contract until 2029. Colorado is using the Cole Bassett money on the 23-year-old.
Minoungou joins a recent flurry of Rapids acquisitions, with Loic Williams and Kosi Thompson also making their way to Colorado during this late window. Williams will be a summer addition, while Thompson will most likely fill in a needed spot with Reggie Cannon out injured. Minoungou comes with a sizable price tag, so how will the young winger shake up this Rapids side?
Who is Georgi Minoungou?
First, Georgi Minoungou has an exceptional story to go alongside his play. The winger had a freak eye injury in 2023. His left eye had gotten infected, and he needed surgery. It became worse for the youngster, as doctors told him that he would never see out of his left eye again, and that his dream to play soccer could be at risk. Despite contemplating retirement, Minoungou gave it one more week and miraculously got the go-ahead from doctors to keep playing.
Even with one eye, Georgi Minoungou has been one of the most electric players on the wing in MLS. In a star-studded Seattle side, it was always going to be difficult to get minutes. Despite this, he is widely regarded as one of the league’s best 1v1 dribblers. This is much needed for the Rapids, who at times lack the creativity to go at a defender. It is the epitome of Georgi Minoungou’s game. He is a flashy winger who won’t shy away from a 1v1.
This flashy playstyle hasn’t exactly led to many goal contributions. The winger has three goals and six assists in 53 appearances with Seattle. He has yet to get a goal contribution in 151 minutes this season. He has also only started 12 games in three years with Seattle. Minoungou has promising per 90 stats. New scenery and more starts/minutes could be just what Georgi Minoungou needs to make that next leap in his career.
How will he fit into Matt Wells’ system?
It is an interesting question. Another winger felt like it would be the end of Alexis Manyoma, who Colorado would have to permanently acquire this summer. Georgi might spell just that for Manyoma. I, personally, was under the impression that Manyoma wasn’t a Matt Wells winger. The Colombian plays with fire too much for Wells’ liking. A Manyoma isn’t going to keep the possession like a Dante Sealy would. But Sealy can’t go at a defender quite like Manyoma does. The risk, however, of losing the ball in this way does not seem to be worth it for Wells.
This is why it felt like Manyoma would not be a Rapid past his loan expiration date. But Georgi Minoungou is very similar to Manyoma. It could mean that Colorado is replacing Manyoma with a similar style of winger. It could also mean that we see Manyoma and Minoungou paired up top alongside Rafa Navarro, causing a whole host of problems for opposing full-backs. This will be something to watch how Matt Wells uses Minoungou.
How Does This Affect the Winger Room?
It is also an interesting case for the rest of the Rapids winger room. Darren Yapi, Ted Ku-DiPietro, Alex Harris, Kimani Stewart-Baynes, and Bryce Jamison will have their minutes affected by this acquisition. Ku-DiPietro seems to be a backup for Paxten Aaronson at the moment, and Harris, KSB, and Jamison are likely not to get too many minutes this season. The one name that will be affected the most is Darren Yapi.
Yapi has been a headache this season, in the best way possible. The homegrown striker has been too good to just be a backup, but with Rafa up top, there isn’t much room for him in his natural position. This has pushed him out wide, where he has had some success this season. Two goals and two assists in four starts are extremely good numbers. Unfortunately for Yapi, Minoungou’s arrival does not bode well for his aspirations to get as many minutes as possible.

Colorado has spent over $4 million GAM on two wingers this offseason, Sealy and Minoungou. The money spent alone suggests that Wells sees both players as starters. The Minoungou trade may indicate the Rapids are expecting some outbound transfers sooner rather than later. Similar to Loic Williams, who will most likely fill in in the case of Lucas Herrington or Rob Holding not being in Colorado in a year’s time. This could spell Rafa’s move to Brazil. It could also mean Manyoma isn’t in the long-term plans. Either way, it is good to have depth, but it is important to keep that depth happy. Colorado might be on the line with a few players.
Rapids fans should be excited for Georgi’s arrival. He is an exciting winger with a great story. He will make this Rapids side better. It’s also another signing that brings this team closer to Matt Wells’ vision. It will be interesting to see what he changes in that winger room, but this is a good trade for the Colorado Rapids. Just ask any Seattle Sounders fan how they feel about him leaving.

Sounders fan here. We all fell in love with Georgi and are sorry to lose him, but DP Pedro De La Vega will be returning from injury soon, and Paul Rothrock and Paul Arriola are both more finished wingers than Georgi is. They were all ahead of him on the depth chart. If Rapids give him the minutes he needs to develop further, your fans will be rewarded, because the tools are all there. Georgi is an exciting player. He has a great first step, and is very tough to defend one-on-one. I know you’ll all enjoy having him. We wish him the best.
