Commerce City, Colo.- The Colorado Rapids announced Thursday that they acquired Kosi Thompson from Toronto FC. The Rapids signed Thompson for 200,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money(GAM) plus up to 200,000 in additional GAM if performance based incentives are met.Â
Thompson, 23, made 113 appearances with Toronto FC across all competitions. Thompson recorded two goals and one assist in 6,614 minutes played.
Thompson arrives just a day after the Rapids announced the signing of defender Luïc Williams from Grenada CF. As the transfer window comes to a close, head coach, Matt Wells and club President, Pádraig Smith have been adamant about adding more pieces to the current roster.Â
Ahead of the match in Kansas City, Wells spoke on the plans to get people through the door before the transfer window closed.
“I’m hopeful that by the time the window closes we have at least one body coming through, because there is no doubt that we need more depth and competition in the squad. It’s never easy to bring players in, and the hard work continues.”
The Rapids add another defender to the likes of Rob Holding, Jackson Travis, Keegan Rosenberry, Lucas Herrington, Noah Cobb, and Miguel Navarro. It’s clear the Rapids targeted defensive depth during this window.
Thompson appears to be an addition that adds quality and depth to the right-back position. It may be that the Reggie Cannon injury is worse than originally expected. Thompson is an important pickup for the Rapids backline. He will certainly increase competition.
Thompson also featured for Toronto FC II in the MLS Next Pro, and it may be the best move for him to get playing time. The Toronto Homegrown has a clear desire for more minutes, and Colorado could definitely provide that. Thompson is quick, decisive, and versatile. It will be interesting to see the plans Wells has.
The move may leave some Rapids fans skeptical. The Rapids backline seems to be set early on in the season with Herrington and Holding providing solid performances. The wingbacks for the Rapids do need depth, and after Cannon’s injury, the move for Thompson is smart.
With reports of Herrington being monitored by Everton, West Ham, and other European clubs, the acquisitions of both defenders might make fans wary of a summer move.
For now, the primary transfer window closes, and the Rapids end it with Thompson, an intriguing trade for depth, quality, and competition across the defensive backline.
