Commerce City, Colo. – Colorado Rapids have confirmed the signing of Ghanaian winger Ibrahim Sadiq, the club announced Thursday afternoon. Sadiq joins MLS from Eredivisie club AZ Alkmaar. Colorado has signed him on a two-and-a-half season (two year) contract through 2027-28 with an option for 2028-29.
“Ibrahim gives us a different dimension in the attacking areas of the pitch,” said Colorado Rapids Head Coach Matt Wells.
“He is explosive, aggressive in one-v-one situations and constantly looks to threaten the space behind the opposition. The fans that watch us week in week out will know how important our pressing is and Ibrahim has the intensity and willingness to defend in that way. He is a player I faced in the Europa League knockout stages when I was at Tottenham and I was a huge admirer of him then after analyzing the problems he was causing teams in the build-up to the game,” Wells continued.
“His pace, directness, and ability to create and score goals from wide areas will add another important dimension to our attack,” added Rapids President Pádraig Smith.
Age 26. Dutch outlets have said the transfer fee is €1 million. Plays mostly right winger but can play on the left and even up top.
He was in the Right to Dream Academy. Played in Denmark and Sweden before AZ, who he joined in 2023. He would have overlapped with Djordje Mihailović for the first half of 2023-24, so maybe the Rapids scouts have been tracking him for a few years. It’s good to see Wells is familiar with him and was impressed by him as an opponent.
In 57 league games, he’s got 11 goals. Total is 18 goals, 7 assists across 85 games for the Dutch club. Offensive stats don’t jump out. He’s seems to be good defensively, good long distance passing, good in the air. For a player listed at 5’8″, not bad. Capped at Ghana U17 and U20 level. Seems like a depth piece. He brings something different to the winger corp. The bar is so low with Sealy traded and Georgi Minoungou not goal dangerous.
Rapids fans might be underwhelmed by this move because of the transfer fee relative to other moves. This could be a similar signing to Connor Ronan in that he’s a floor raiser and a depth piece. He hasn’t always been a regular starter in Europe. Neither was Hamzat Ojediran and that’s been a fantastic signing.

I’ve been a part of the Rapids since Day 1 (literally). It’s always been hard to be a small market team, particularly in confines of MLS. Rapids let themselves get behind many others as the quality of the league evolved. It seems front office’ strategy for catch-up is perhaps taking hold. Couple of cliches…1. Success starts with getting the right people in the right seats on the bus. 2. It takes time to turn a supertanker. Regardless of front office qualms some people may have, the head coach is that bus driver. Matt Wells has to a front-runner for MLS coach of the year. Morgan Whittaker does not sign without a coach of Matt Wells’ caliber and experience. He has brought a level of excellence that permeates all aspects of the club – physical fitness, technical skills, tactical nous, and the most difficult – mentality. Beyond that, his communication style is open and direct, positive and honest – very refreshing. You don’t bring a leader like that in without giving them the tools to do the job. It appears front office has learned from its mistakes with these transfer window moves. I like the direction. So, local press, give credit where credit is due. I encourage you to shed the baggage of past frustrations (I get hints in some of the writing of some rancor at personal slights?). What I am seeing this year is a quantum leap forward! Now about that scoreboard LOL…
