Commerce City, Colo.- The Rapids returned home in a crucial home match against the Whitecaps on Saturday night. Matt Wells and Colorado needed a result after coming to a bit of a stutter in the past weeks.
The performance was exactly what Colorado needed. Starting lineups remained relatively unchanged for Colorado. Morgan Whittaker was at the false nine, Noah Cobb got the start, and Paxten Aaronson returned to the lineup.
A Whittaker 80th minute winner proved the difference as the Rapids picked up all three points over the Whitecaps.
Focus now turns towards an away trip on Wednesday to San Jose.
Nico Hansen
A clean sheet and three points, so not too much to pick apart performance-wise. He was calm in possession, found the right spaces to play, and controlled his box. He made saves when he had to, and delivered a sound performance. 8/10
Kosi Thompson
Deservedly got the start for the second week in a row. Thompson looked confident in his play and was solid. He defended his box excellently, and he even made a few strides forward at times. Also came close to scoring or assisting multiple times on the night. 8/10

Rob Holding
A consistent and assured performance from the veteran center back. Holding showed composure in possession and left no easy chances for Vancouver’s high-powered attack. A great night. 8/10
Noah Cobb
Loic Williams was out with a slight quad injury. Cobb filled in and looked solid. Defensively, he was in the right position, and in possession, Cobb played a few excellent breaking passes into the midfield line. 8/10
Miguel Navarro
Navarro has been very good this year. He was in at left-back and played well. Defensively, he left few chances for Vancouver’s wingers. On the ball, he linked up well out wide and through the middle. 7.5/10
Hamzat Ojediran
In at defensive midfield again. Ojediran was strong in tackles in the midfield and added important defensive work rate. Whittaker nearly scored on one of his through balls, splitting the defense and creating good opportunities. 8/10
Wayne Frederick
What a season it’s been for Frederick. He’s really blossomed as a player under Wells. The trust and confidence shows on the pitch. He linked up play well, created opportunities, and got forward himself. A true number eight performance. 8.5/10
Josh Atencio
Alongside Ojediran in defensive midfield. A solid performance. There’s not too much to complain about. It was a crucial win, and a crucial performance defensively. Atencio got out of position a few times, but it was a good night for him. 7/10
Georgi Minoungou
One of Minoungou’s stronger showings this year. Although he wasn’t involved in the goal, he was much more direct and effective out wide. There were multiple real dangerous balls into the box that could have resulted in assists. 7.5/10
Paxten Aaronson
Aaronson filled in out wide on the night. A necessary tactical change that worked. He was dangerous with the ball at his feet and created multiple dangerous opportunities. On another night, there’s a lot more goals in this one for the Rapids against the Whitecaps. 7/10
Morgan Whittaker
His first goal in several games and what a time to get it. It might not have been the prettiest finish, but the buildup play was excellent. Whittaker looked his most dangerous at the false nine. Dropping into pockets, spraying play wide, and taking 1-v-1 chances was his bread and butter. An impressive showing. 8.5/10 man of the match
Substitutes
Donavan Phillip
Phillip replaced Navarro in the 62nd minute. He filled in out wide and looked strong again. Phillip was directly involved in the goal, receiving the ball out wide, and firing it towards goal. 7/10
Sayed Abu Farkhi
Farkhi entered in the 68th minute in place of Minoungou. A much better showing this time out. He got on the ball and linked up well with Whittaker through the middle to create the game winner. 7/10
Jackson Travis and Loic Williams subbed on too late to be judged fairly
Matt Wells
The Rapids really needed to show something against the Whitecaps. There has been some dismal and unconvincing showings in the recent weeks. Colorado looked the part. They were at it from the beginning, and that is credit to Wells for getting his gameplan across and executing at home.
There easily could have been three or four goals on the night, and defensively Vancouver were limited.
Performances like tonight are what gets a team into the playoffs with enough confidence and the right mentality to have success. Credit to Wells for experimenting with Whittaker and the attack panning out.
Three more tests remain for this Rapids side. It’s San Jose on Wednesday, Chicago on Halloween, and Dallas on decision day. Wells will be disappointed with the dropped points, but if they approach the last three games this way, Colorado will be in a good spot. 7/10
